El Alamein
"The battle which is about to begin will be one of the most important battles in history.
It will be the turning point of the war."
Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, October 1942

The Battle of El Alamein took place near the railroad depot of El Alamein, 150 miles west of Cairo. Many soldiers said that fighting in the desert was like fighting at sea. It was hard to get your bearings. Tanks were especially important for desert fighting, similar to ships in naval warfare.
"To the north of this apparently unremarkable town [El Alamein] was the Mediterranean Sea and to the south was the Qattara Depression. El Alamein was a bottleneck that ensures that Rommel could not use his favored form of attack - sweeping into the enemy from the rear."
